Sting leads to child sex charges against Colo. man

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A northern Colorado man faces federal child sex charges following an Internet sting operation.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Cheyenne alleges 57-year-old John Scott Pinkerton of Pierce, Colo., responded to an advertisement that a law enforcement agent had placed on the Internet classified advertising site Craigslist.

According to the complaint, Pinkerton agreed to pay $200 to have sex with and photograph a 12-year-old girl. Police arrested Pinkerton after he traveled to a Cheyenne motel July 3 with cash and a camera.

Prosecutors have charged Pinkerton with attempted sexual exploitation of a child and online solicitation of a minor. Pinkerton is in custody and faces a detention hearing on Thursday.

Court records don’t reflect that Pinkerton has an attorney yet.
