Students qualify for state math contest
Three schools and eight students from the central portion of the Western Slope qualified Saturday for the state Math Counts tournament March 13 at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
The East Middle School team of Bryce Atchison, Justin Fay, Lindsay Gnesios and Matthew Ness placed first in the Ute Chapter team competition Saturday in Grand Junction.
Messiah Lutheran School placed second, and Hotchkiss K-8 School placed third.
All three teams will compete at the March 13 competition, where they could qualify for the national Math Counts competition May 6-9 in Orlando, Fla.
Western Slope individuals headed to the state competition include: Tiana Menon and Jay Bumgarner of East Middle School; Greg Gibson and Faith Gipson of Holy Family Catholic School; Joseph Reyelts of Rifle Middle School; Hotchkiss K-8 School’s Krista Trefen and Taylor Polson; and Colin Hastings of Dolores Middle School.
Saturday’s tournament featured students from 18 Western Slope schools.
Math Counts is a math competition for middle-school students. Students compete by answering math questions aloud or by working on math problems on paper.
