Suspect held in Fruitvale shootings

Suspected gunman has pleaded guilty in two cases this year

• Joshua Anton’s record includes arrests on allegations of assault, burglary, menacing with a weapon, underage liquor possession, larceny, trespassing and property damage. The most recent arrest came on a warrant alleging contempt of court Aug. 7.

Anton was sentenced to 24 hours of community service and a year of probation after pleading guilty in February to trespassing in a vehicle. On Sept. 1, he pleaded guilty to property damage, trespassing, menacing and assault charges and received a sentence of 19 days in jail for time served.

Since she had her son, Makaylah Ross has had “mom ears” set to hear the slightest sound.

But after a four-day trip to Breckenridge, she was too tired to hear the shots a few yards away at 2984 Krista St. that sent five people to St. Mary’s Hospital early Sunday.

Mesa County sheriff’s deputies arrested a suspect, Joshua Gregory Anton, 20, about four hours after shots rang out in the Fruitvale neighborhood. Anton has been arrested five times since Jan. 31, 2008, in Grand Junction.

Ross’ bedroom window faces the house where shots were fired around 2:15. She said she’s heard noise at the two-story, gray home before.

“There’s always something going on at that end of the neighborhood,” Ross said. “The cops were always getting called over there.”

Deputies have gone to the home at least seven times since February, including two calls for harassment, two welfare checks, one theft call, one liquor violation call and then Sunday’s call about the shooting.

The names, ages and genders of the victims were not released Sunday by the Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sally Weese said deputies had determined the shooting was not random. The arrest warrant for Anton was sealed Sunday.

An address directory search listed Colleen F. Foust at the home where the shooting occurred, but the listing does not specify whether Foust owns or lives at the residence. There was no person of the same name listed as a patient at St. Mary’s Hospital at 5 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Mesa County Assessor’s Office Web site, Great Style Inc. owns the home.

Jacop Earich, who lives in a home behind the 2984 Krista St. house, said the only time he interacted with the people who lived there was to tell the children to go to bed. He said he saw kids outside the house “at 12, 1 at night on a Wednesday.” He said he believed a mother and her children lived in the home. Earich didn’t see the shooting, but he woke up when officers arrived at the scene.

“I woke up at 3 (a.m.) and saw the lights. I went back to bed,” Earich said.

Ross said she didn’t know her neighbor by name, but knew a family lived there.

“There’s kids there all the time,” she said.
