The Warrior way: Central rallies from early deficit to top Montrose

The Montrose High School wrestling team’s reign atop the Southwestern League could be coming to an end.

Central took a big step to putting an ending the Indians’ four-year title run with a 41-29 victory Thursday night in Montrose.

“It was a good win,” Central coach Laurence Gurule said. “We wrestled tough. Our 60-pounder did a great job. Thomas Holman had a huge win.”

The Warriors (7-6, 1-0 SWL) won seven of the last nine matches to rally from a 20-5 deficit.

Willy Holdren started Central’s run with a 9-4 victory over Chris Sandoval at 145 pounds. Zach Short pinned Lyle Wright then Lester Miranda-Davis defeated Jacob Kirby 19-6 at 160.

Holman pinned Montrose’s Cole Panter in 1:23 at 215 pounds to give Central a 30-23 lead and Oscar Ruiz capped the victory with an 18-3 win at 103. Cameron Deverick won the first match of the dual for the Warriors.

Geordon Hudson, Drew Schumann, Kordell Bradshaw, Marcus Velasquez and Bryce Gaber won matches for the Indians (8-2, 0-1).

Palisade 54, Eagle Valley 20: The Bulldogs had five pins and three forfeit wins for a Western Slope League victory.

Palisade’s Dalton Hannigan, Justin Ray, Mason Day, Marcus Vincent, Kyle Hatcher and Joey Dupre pinned their opponents. Daniel Salazar and Trevan Gardner won decisions.

Eagle Valley’s Matt Kottenstette defeated Eddie Vial 8-0 at 160 pounds.

Delta 39, Olathe 36: Nathan Trujillo pinned Olathe’s Blaine Sinks in the final match to lift the Panthers to a victory.

Each team had seven wins, but Delta picked up a forfeit and a win by disqualification.

Mykal DeHerrera pinned Olathe’s Trenton Piatt at 103, Rudy Fantin pinned Ryan Pridy at 135 and Dylon Taylor pinned Olathe’s Dustin Kelso at 152.

Jacob Solseth, Ben Pridy, Zach Shank, Wyatt Yarnell, Brenton Martinez, Myles Yarnell and Kyle Piatt won for the Pirates.

Hotchkiss 37, Paonia 30: The Bulldogs won the last four matches to rally for victory.

Dalton Rupe, Jesse Head, Ben Smith and Jake Richards had pins for Hotchkiss.

Vikash Hypio, Marco Meza, Dylan Hill and Kyle Douglas won decisions.

Dustin Braslin, Cody Rapke and Tyler Bear had pins for Paonia. Adrian Lopez, K.C. Christian and Morgan Reider won decisions.

Gunnison 52, Cedaredge 21: The Cowboys picked up five pins to go with three wins by forfeit for the victory.

Beau Hebert and Peter Williamson won matches for the Bruins.
