Theater manager robbed at gunpoint

Police Monday were looking for a man who robbed the manager of a Grand Junction movie theater at gunpoint.

The robbery — which was the third in just over three weeks involving the threat of a weapon at a local business — was reported around 12:20 a.m. Monday after a white male approached an employee in the parking lot of Carmike Cinema 7, 590 24 1/2 Road, and demanded money.

The suspect ran away toward Industrial Boulevard with an undisclosed amount of cash, Grand Junction police said.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the man got away with cash belonging to the theater or the manager’s personal money.

The manager wasn’t hurt.

The robber was wearing a gray sweatshirt, black pants, a black stocking cap and a black scarf over his face. Staff at the local cinema declined comment; the theater was open for regular business by late Monday morning.

Porras said investigators don’t believe the robbery is connected to a pair of incidents in May, including Friday’s robbery at Vectra Bank, 2394 F Road.

Around noon Friday, a man described by police as a white male, 25 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a thin build, walked into the bank and demanded money without showing a gun.

He fled with cash in a white cargo van, which was last seen headed west on F Road in the direction of U.S. Highway 6&50, police said.

Authorities also have yet to make an arrest in the May 8 robbery of Rite Aid, 1834 N. 12th St. The suspect showed a gun and demanded prescription drugs, but authorities haven’t confirmed what the man left the store with.

Police in 2008 handled 16 reported armed robberies, which was one more than 2007, according to figures compiled by the department. There were 19 reported in 2006.

Data for the first five months of 2009 wasn’t immediately available.
