Tigers top Ponderosa

Two players made their long awaited return and mixed in with several new faces.

Jamie Derrieux and Kricket Adleman returned after season-ending injuries last year to lead Grand Junction to a 50-36 victory over Ponderosa on Thursday in the first round of the Battle at the Ridge Invitational in Littleton.

Derrieux scored 24 points to lead the Tigers (1-0). She hit three 3-pointers and made 7 of 13 free throws. Adleman scored six points and Shafer Rubalcaba added eight.

“It looked like I thought,” Grand Junction coach Sam Provenza said. “Every time they made a run, we weathered it. Our kids never doubted each other. We did a nice job passing around zone. Jamie played the way we thought she would.”

Cowboy Shootout: Palisade overcame first-game jitters to defeat Rangely 42-41 in the first round of the Meeker Invitational.

“They worked really hard,” Palisade coach Toni Gunther said. “We got the first game jitters out.”

The Bulldogs (1-0) were down by three midway through the fourth quarter and rallied to take the lead and hold on for the win.
