Tipton eyes 3rd District run against Salazar

State Rep. Scott Tipton, a Cortez Republican who lost a previous bid for Congress to Democrat John Salazar, is thinking about taking another run for the 3rd Congressional District.

Tipton visited with Grand Junction Republicans on Thursday at the Gala Restaurant, 2650 North Ave., Suite 106, as part of his tour that will help him decide whether to seek the post.

Salazar is seeking his fourth term in the House representing the western and southern sides of the state.

“So, you’re going to do it?” asked Dan Wilkenson of Grand Junction, a former state legislative candidate himself.

“We’re taking a serious look,” Tipton responded.

Though he isn’t a candidate, Tipton voiced some observations about Salazar’s performance.

“He’s been very adept at the business of not taking a stand on any of the important issues of the day,” Tipton said, citing issues such as the stimulus package, cap and trade, and health care.

One other Republican, District Attorney Martin Beeson of the 9th Judicial District, has announced his bid for the job.

Tipton lost to Salazar in 2006. It was Salazar’s first re-election bid.
