Tipton: Give Petraeus a chance in Afghanistan

Scott Tipton

Scott Tipton, the Republican hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., rallied about 45 supporters Thursday during a campaign stop in Grand Junction.

Tipton, a Cortez businessman and state legislator, sounded his themes of budget cuts and tax decreases before the group, which filled a room at GOP headquarters, 341 S. First St.

Discretionary nondefense spending should be cut 10 percent, while capital gains and corporate taxes are cut to 10 percent to fire up American business and hiring, Tipton said.

Spending cuts, however, shouldn’t be allowed to affect the U.S. commitment to victory in Afghanistan, Tipton told one political opponent who attended the rally.

“I would give Gen. (David) Petraeus the chance to implement his plan” for Afghanistan, where American forces have been battling the Taliban and al-Qaida for more than nine years, Tipton said. “We would be there to win because we can’t afford to lose.”

Tipton also pledged not to increase taxes and “let Washington know that our checkbook is closed.”
