Trial for accused molester continues

A 4-year-old girl said in videotaped interview with police that Daniel Lyons sexually molested her and told her not to tell anyone or he’d go to jail.

The video was played on a television screen Tuesday in court for jurors during the second day of a four-day trial of Daniel Lyons, 35, of Clifton. Lyons is being tried on charges of sexual assault on a child and sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse, among other counts, for allegedly repeatedly assaulting a 4-year-old girl.

During the Jan. 20, 2009, interview, the girl told Mesa County Sheriff’s Department investigator Jim Hebenstreit that Lyons had molested her five different times while she was at his home.

“He said, ‘Don’t tell no one,’” the girl told Hebenstreit. “I didn’t want (him) to get in really big trouble.”

Hours after being interviewed on Jan. 21 by authorities about the girl’s allegations, Lyons attempted to drive his van off Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument.

His vehicle got stuck on a rock ledge, and he was rescued by emergency personnel.
