Trial underway for ex-Mesa educator
Jury selection ran a full day on Monday in the trial of a former teacher and school board member accused in an alleged five-year secret sexual relationship with an underage girl.
Rodney Eddy, 68, of Mesa, appeared free on bond in District Judge Valerie Robison’s courtroom, where he faces trial on 36 felony counts, including sexual assault by a person in a position of trust, sexual exploitation of a child, obscenity and sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse.
Eddy was arrested in December 2008 after his alleged victim reported numerous sex acts with him over five years starting the summer of 2003, according to an arrest affidavit.
The girl told investigators they viewed pornography together, while authorities have alleged a computer seized from Eddy’s home contained numerous images of suspected child pornography.
The girl also told investigators that Eddy gave her muscle relaxants and alcohol to facilitate sex.
She said she thought she was in love with Eddy at the time.
A former substitute teacher with Mesa County School District 51, Eddy was elected to the Plateau Valley School District’s board of education in November 2007. He resigned in the summer of 2008.
Attorneys have reserved time in Robison’s courtroom through Feb. 12 for the trial.
