Two children dead in crash near Gunnison
Two children died after a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 50 east of Gunnison this morning.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Jamie Dowling, 22, of Irving, Texas, was traveling west near mile marker 169 when Dowling lost control on the snowpacked highway. The Cobalt spun into the eastbound lane and was hit on its passenger side by a 1994 Chevrolet Beretta heading east and driven by Everardo Ento-Salida, 23, of Gunnison, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Two passengers in the Cobalt, a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were restrained at the time of the crash but sustained fatal injuries, the State Patrol reported. The boy died at the scene of the crash and the girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Dowling, who wasn’t wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained serious injuries, according to the State Patrol, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Ento-Salida was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries, according to the State Patrol.
Excessive speed and alcohol or drug use are not suspected as contributing factors in the crash, according to the State Patrol. The snowpacked road had been plowed prior to the crash and snow reportedly was falling at the time of the crash, the State Patrol reported.
No charges have been filed against either driver and the investigation is ongoing.
