Two dead, two more missing after boat capsizes at Lake Powell

Two people are dead and two others are presumed dead after strong winds Saturday capsized a boat on Lake Powell that was carrying three couples in their 50s and 60s, all from Arizona and Florida.

Among the dead were Mary Anne Taranto of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Katherine Prescott of St. Petersburg, Fla., according to Chief Deputy Tracy Glover of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department in Utah. Missing are the women’s husbands, Terry Michael Taranto and Robert Prescott.

A National Park Service ranger located and rescued James and Heather Brady on the shore of Padre Butte. They were treated for hypothermia.

Dispatch received a call at about 5 p.m. Saturday that the boaters were overdue.

The two bodies were recovered after a search, and authorities today will continue seeking the mens’ bodies.

The boaters were thought to be “fairly experienced” and were boating in a 20-foot, daycruiser, Glover said. Winds in nearby areas were reported up to 70 mph Saturday.

Glover said the boaters were sightseeing around the lake, which is typical for this time of year.

Deputies from sheriff’s departments in Utah’s Kane County and San Juan County and officers with Utah State Parks conducted the searches using an airplane, a helicopter and boats.

“We will continue to look for them for as long as it takes,” Glover said.
