Two die in 700-foot fall from backcountry trail

A 41-year-old father and his 9-year-old son from Lakewood were killed Monday morning after their vehicle plunged 700 feet off a backcountry trail in Garfield County, authorities said.

The accident, which was reported at 11:19 a.m., happened nine miles up Transfer Trail north of Glenwood Springs in an area known as Windy Point, Garfield County sheriff’s spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

A search and rescue crew was expected to work into the night in snowy conditions to recover the bodies, McGinnis said.
