Two killed in I-70 crash

A 25-year-old man from Rifle and a 31-year-old man from Silt were killed last night when the car they were riding in rolled over in De Beque Canyon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The rollover of their black 1996 Honda Civic was reported just after 9:30 p.m., near Interstate 70 mile marker 57.

“At this point we don’t know who was driving. One was partially ejected, and one of them was fully ejected. Both of them were declared dead on scene,” said Trooper Josh Lewis with the CSP.

Lewis said that it’s likely neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, due to their ejections from the vehicle.

A coroner’s investigation will reveal whether drugs or alcohol were considered factors in the crash, Lewis said.

At least three other vehicles were damaged in trying to avoid the crash, though none of those vehicles’ occupants suffered any major injuries.

The highway was partially shut down for a number of hours Thursday night. The westbound lane was re-opened at 12:45 a.m., and the eastbound lane where the rollover occurred reopened at 3:30 a.m., Lewis said.
