Valley schools all post wins in Bill Fanning Classic

The season-opening nerves were there, but Palisade, Fruita Monument and Central overcame them to win their first baseball games of the season in the Bill Fanning Classic.

Palisade overcame an early 2-0 deficit Thursday and held on to defeat Horizon 7-5 at Suplizio Field.

“Our guys were really tight,” Palisade coach Steve Moore said. “I’m proud they came out and didn’t keep their heads down, came back and had one big inning.”

The Bulldogs (1-0) scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead and held off a Horizon rally. Junior Tate Herland came through with a three-run double to the left-field corner and scored on a Gabe Hellmann single.

The Hawks scored on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh before Caleb Hall came in and got a ground ball out to end the game.

Palisade senior Cody Krabbe allowed two earned runs on six hits in five innings to pick up the victory.

Hellmann was 3 for 3 with one RBI and Herland was 1 for 3 with three RBI.

Fruita Monument 10, Fossil Ridge 9: The Wildcats rallied from an 8-1 deficit to win their season opener in dramatic fashion.

“The seniors took it upon themselves to get the job done,” Fruita coach Ray McLennan said. “Anytime you gain the momentum, it helps you.”

Senior Dallin Wright started it, stretching a single into a double and scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

In the seventh, Ryan Blair led off with a triple and scored on Matt Scofield’s double. Levi Kramer doubled home two runs to tie the game 9-9 and scored on Doran Wood’s single with one out to end the game.

Wright was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI. Scofield picked up the win in relief of Shai Fullmer.

Central 11, Woodland Park 1: The Warriors quickly put any nerves aside with a five-run first inning allowing Alex Kitzman to work with some breathing room.

The Central senior limited the Panthers to one run on three hits and struck out five in four innings for the victory.

Alec Rupe was 3 for 4 and Tanner Reid was 2 for 3 with three RBI.
