Venerable Telluride eatery destroyed in fire

A 33-year-old Telluride bakery and deli was described by officials Wednesday as a total loss following a late night fire that remains under investigation.

Baked in Telluride, 127 South Fir St., which bills itself online as the town’s oldest established food service, was the scene of a continued fire suppression effort Wednesday morning and afternoon as firefighters watched for flare-ups, while digging through rubble in the early stages of an investigation, according to John Bennett, fire training officer with the Telluride Fire Protection District.

Firefighters were initially called just after 10 p.m. Tuesday to investigate smoke in the kitchen reported by employees who were cleaning up after closing for the night.

When firefighters arrived, they found a working fire, which they initially were unable to reach for “a multitude of reasons,” Bennett said.

Firefighters assumed a defensive position around the building, trying to prevent the blaze from spreading, he said.

There were no injuries to employees or firefighters.

Bennett said a cause and a point of origin for the fire had not been determined Wednesday.

The owner of the business, 62-year-old Telluride resident Jerry Greene, said adjustors for his insurer were at the scene seeking the same answers.

Greene started baking at the location in December 1976, while the store eventually expanded into a deli offering a variety of foods.

“It’s my intention to rebuild at the same location,” Greene said, adding he already is looking into the possibility of renting short-term office space.

While pondering the future of his business, Greene expressed concern for his now-jobless 25 employees. “There are other restaurants around here that have expressed interest in hiring some of them,” he said. “Telluride is doing all right, but it’s still not an easy economy.”
