Walters State hires Joey Seaver to replace retired Ken Campbell

When Ken Campbell retired as Walters State (Tenn.) Community College baseball coach last month, he said he hoped the school would hire his replacement from within the program.

That happened Friday, when Walters State hired Joey Seaver, the Senators’ pitching coach the past 14 years,  as the head coach. David Shelton, the Senators’ assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, was promoted to associate head coach.

“We felt we had two of the nation’s best young baseball coaches already a part of our program,” Walters State Athletic Director Foster Chason said in a release. “It would be hard to find two coaches with greater knowledge or abilities than Joey Seaver and David Shelton. In promoting these two outstanding men, we feel we will continue the strong baseball tradition established at Walters State.

“Most importantly, they will continue to emphasize the development of our student-athletes academically, personally and physically through discipline, hard work, responsibility and sportsmanship.”

Campbell retired in July after winning 1,200 games in his 39-year career, including the past 14 at Walters State, where he won 650 games.

Seaver and Campbell built the Senators into a program that reached the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series five times in Campbell’s tenure. Walters won the 2006 national championship, going 61-8.

Walters went 31-18 this past season, winning the East Central District title to qualify for JUCO, going 0-2.

Seaver pithed at Walters State and was on the first Senators team to qualify for JUCO, in 1984.

Justin Pickett, another former player at Walters State, will stay on the staff as an assistant coach.

“I look at this as a group effort between myself, David and Justin, and I feel like we have three head coaches here,” Seaver said in the release. “I really respect them and enjoy working with them, and they have been a big part of the success here. We are excited to get to work on keeping that tradition going.”
