Walters State tops latest JUCO poll
Defending national champion Navarro (Texas) College broke into the NJCAA Division I baseball rankings this week.
After losing six straight games in February, the Bulldogs turned things around, winning 13 of their past 14 games to improve to 22-8, 15-4 in conference play.
Included in that run is a 1-0, 12-inning win over Texarkana College that helped the Bulldogs move from the “receiving votes” category to No. 16 this week.
Walters State (Tenn.) Community College (28-3) moved up into the No. 1 spot, replacing Louisburg (S.C.) College (33-3), which fell into a tie at No. 2 with 2010 national champion Iowa Western Community College (19-1).
The Senators, who won the 2006 JUCO World Series, have won 14 of their past 15 games.
Central Alabama Community College (26-5) is fourth and Wabash Valley (Ill.) College (25-5) is fifth.
Other familiar teams to Alpine Bank Junior College World Series fans in the top 20 are No. 7 Western Nevada (25-7), No. 8 Howard (Texas) College (20-5), No. 10 Seminole State (Okla.) College (20-5), and last year’s national runner-up, No. 20 Central Arizona College (22-12), which started the season ranked No. 1.
Regional playoffs begin the first week of May, with the first JUCO qualifier determined by May 9, when the Gulf District wraps up its tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
The JUCO World Series is May 29-June 2 at Suplizio Field. General admission tournament passes go on sale Monday at Alpine Bank branches, the JUCO office in the Home Loan Building (4th and Rood), the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce, City Market stores and B&H Sports.
Tournament passes are $35 for adults, $25 for students (6-21) and senior citizens (65-older).
