Ward Gulch Fire at 682 acres

A wildfire north of Rifle is burning on 682 acres.

On Saturday, the Ward Gulch Fire had been reported burning on 340 acres in pinon and juniper trees, but better mapping of the blaze determined the fire’s size was larger than first reported, according to spokesman Pat Thrasher.

More firefighters, for a total of about 280, are on the scene and the blaze is about 15 percent contained, Thrasher said.

Residents of about dozen homes that had been evacuated are invited to a meeting at 4 p.m. today at the Rifle Fire Station.

A brief rain shower Sunday helped tamp down the blaze, but more moisture is needed to make a substantial difference to the dry air.

Thrasher said he couldn’t say when the fire is expected to be 100 percent contained but he reported firefighting efforts seemed to be working well Saturday night and Sunday morning.
