Website pal keeps vigil for victim
For years, The Kitchen Guy, a regular commenter on http://www.chefsuccess.com, began his day posting the latest news on the disappearance of Paige Birgfeld.
Birgfeld had been, until her disappearance nearly four years ago, a regular poster on the same site, on which representatives of the Pampered Chef exchange ideas and news.
As time passed and the investigation into Birgfeld’s disappearance sparked less and less attention, The Kitchen Guy’s posts became robotic: “There were no new developments in Paige’s case yesterday. No news, no new developments.”
The “no news” refrain continued on The Kitchen Guy’s postings on Sunday and Monday, but on Tuesday, The Kitchen Guy made a final post: “Due to technical difficulties beyond my control, the Morning Update is going on hiatus. No further information is available at this time.”
The following day, Wednesday, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department searched an area field, and it acknowledged the search was related to the Birgfeld case.
Efforts to reach The Kitchen Guy were unsuccessful. A return from his message box said it was full. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department had no comment on the blog.
The Kitchen Guy has in recent months directed readers of his posts to another site, “Candles for Paige.”
Readers could follow the link for instructions on how to light a virtual candle in Birgfeld’s honor. The candles burn for 48 hours.
The candle site had 42 candles burning in her honor on April 27, which would have been Birgfeld’s 38th birthday. That morning, The Kitchen Guy noted, “Happy birthday, Paige, wherever you are. You are missed and you are loved. There were no new developments in Paige’s case yesterday. No news, no new developments.”
On Wednesday, 35 candles were burning in Birgfeld’s honor.
