Weinberg, one doubles advance to state finals
Grand Junction High School tennis players Spencer Weinberg and the No. 1 doubles team of Jake Filutze and Owen Gardner will play for state titles Saturday morning.
Weinberg, the defending Class 5A No. 1 singles player, defeated Boulder’s Jaron Belcher 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals at Gates Tennis Center. Weinberg plays Highlands Ranch junior Hayden Sabatka in the championship final at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Filutze and Gardner rallied from a set down to defeat Arapahoe’s Zach Cohen and Jeff Craig 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles semifinals. The undefeated Tigers duo plays Spencer Anderson and Jack Greene of Cherry Creek in the final.
Grand Junction’s Luke Ledebur (No. 2 singles), No. 2, 3 and 4 doubles teams lost in the semifinals, but are in playback matches this afternoon.
