Western Slope prep grapplers will tangle with German counterparts

Some Western Slope high school wrestlers will get a unique opportunity to wrestle a dual against a German high-school-aged team this weekend.

Two teams of Western Slope wrestlers will wrestle a German team with several club champion wrestlers.

The first dual is scheduled for 10 a.m. with a second dual at noon at Central High School. The duals will be freestyle (Olympic) format.

Several area youth wrestlers will escort the teams onto the mat beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Admission is $9 for both duals or $5 per dual for adults and $4 for students with student identification. Children ages 4 and under get in free. All pee wee wrestlers with team a T-shirt and a paid parent get free admission.

Former Grand Junction High School wrestling state champion Ray Coca will be recognized for his contribution to wrestling. Coca recently had his book “Elite U.S. Dream Team — A Wrestling Story” published. Copies of his book will be available at the event. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to wrestling programs in Mesa County.

Central wrestling coach Laurence Gurule put together the dual.

“Six years ago, (former Broomfield coach) Mark Schmidt had a German team come wrestle his team,” Gurule said. “I told him I’d like to do that, and I’ve kept in touch with him.”

Several Central High School wrestlers will compete along with Paonia’s two-time state champion Jesse Reed, Paonia’s Bo Pipher, Olathe’s Austin Shank, Trenton Piatt and Jacob Solseth, Fruita Monument’s Jacob Seely, Palisade’s Randon Espinoza and Pat Flynn, Montrose’s Marcus Velasquez and Terrell Banuelos, Cedaredge’s Austin Todd and Durango’s Matthew Lavengood and Nick Tarpley.

Gurule and Justin Seely will coach the USA Western Slope team.

The duals will be scored by individual wins. Each win is equal to one team point. There will be no bonus points, Gurule said.

The German team wrestled duals in Greeley and the Denver metro area earlier this week.
