Wildlife officials warn against feeding bears

EAGLE — Colorado Division of Wildlife officers are warning the public not to feed bears after two people were seen feeding cheeseburgers to a female black bear with three cubs.

Eagle police got several phone calls Wednesday reporting a sow and the cubs going through a Dumpster at a restaurant, attracting a small crowd of people.

Witnesses said that they saw at least two people buying hamburgers and hand-feeding them to the bears.

Division Regional Manager Ron Velarde tells the Vail Daily that the sow and the cubs now know that people mean food, increasing the likelihood that the bears will get into trouble in the future and have to be put down.
