Winter makes its high country appearance
4 to 8 inches of snow fall on mesa
Grand Mesa received its first snow over the weekend, with 4 to 8 inches falling, according to a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
Jeff Colton, who works out of the agency’s office at the Grand Junction Regional Airport, said while the high country can have snow as early as August, this was the first time this year that snow fell on the mesa.
“These sort of things always happen around the Colorado Color Sundays,” Colton said.
Colton said the cool overnight temperatures in the high country should continue through the week, though no snowfall is projected for the Grand Valley.
“The valley looks OK right now, but we may see our first 39-degree day Tuesday morning,” he said.
According to National Weather Service data, the last time snowfall was recorded at the airport was May 1.
National Weather Service records show the first snowfall of late 2007 came on Dec. 8.
