Winter to return in time for workweek

Sunday was a mild day for a couple to walk along Riverfront Trail across the Colorado River from the Connected Lakes section of James M. Robb Colorado River State Park. Today through at least Wednesday won’t be nearly as pleasant, according to the National Weather Service.

Hope you got in that hike, bike ride or round of golf the past few days, because Old Man Winter is set to provide a chilly reminder this week that he’s still around and in charge.

After a spate of unseasonably warm weather, a Pacific low-pressure system and a cold front will pack a one-two punch to western Colorado beginning today, bringing several inches of snow to the high country and a mix of rain and snow to the lower elevations.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction forecasts a 70 percent chance of a rain-snow mix for the city today, with a high around 40 degrees. Little or no accumulation is expected, but highs are expected to drop to around 20 Tuesday and the upper-teens Wednesday.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for most of the Western Slope, including Grand Mesa, the Uncompahgre Plateau and the San Juan Mountains. Forecasters are calling for 4 to 10 inches of snow in the mountains, with some areas receiving more than a foot.

The Grand Valley could use the moisture. Grand Junction has received just 0.1 inch of precipitation and 2 inches of snow this month, below the normal averages of 0.58 inch of precipitation and 5.8 inches of snow, according to the Weather Service.

Warmer weather should return to the area by the end of the week. Grand Junction’s high could rebound to 40 degrees by Saturday.
