With Christmas a wrap, think recycling

Recycling rules

Some of the extras that make the holidays merry cannot be recycled locally, according to Curbside Recycling Indefinitely. In general that includes wavy and shiny wrapping papers and decorations.

Keep the following in mind:

• Break down cardboard boxes before recycling.

• Plastics must be labeled 1 or 2.

• Remove bows from wrapping paper.

• No plastic Christmas trees.

• No foil-like wrapping paper.

You’ve given everyone else a present this holiday season, so why not give a gift to Mother Nature?

Instead of throwing out all of the holiday’s excess, try recycling it.

There are a number of items that local recyclers will accept, including cardboard, wrapping paper, tissue paper, gift boxes, greeting cards without photographs, and some plastics.

Kym Beck of Curbside Recycling Indefinitely said the company gets many calls this time of year about whether it accepts real Christmas trees. They don’t. But the real trees can be recycled at the Mesa County organic composting facility near the Mesa County Landfill, 3071 U.S. Highway 50.

Recycling trees is free, but make sure trees have been stripped of ornaments and tinsel. Flocked trees are not accepted. The facility is open Tuesday through Saturdays, and can be contacted by phone at 263-9319.

For CRI recycling customers, pickup services have been postponed for those who usually get services on the fourth Thursdays and fourth Fridays of the month. Thursday pickups will be Dec. 29 and Friday pickups will be Dec. 30.

The drop-off facility by the city shops off West Avenue will be closed until Monday.

This time of year is busy for recyclers, Beck said.

“Our pickups double, and the drop-off is nonstop,” she said. “Everybody is trying to get cleaned out for the new year.”
