RSSWith little snow, monument to open Rim Rock Drive
A closed gate at the Independece Monument View on Rim Rock Drive is now closed in Colorado National Monument.With little snow pack in January and warm weather the Monument is now plowing Rim Rock Drive bewteen Indepedence Monument View on the west and DS Road on the east and hope to reopen the drive on January 31.
The lack of a winter wonderland has Colorado National Monument changing plans to keep the top of Rim Rock Drive closed until the spring.
By Monday, motorists will be able to drive all of Rim Rock Drive. Plowing operations are expected to continue for the next few days.
During daylight hours until Monday, pedestrians will be allowed to walk along the portion of the road that has been closed. They can walk their dogs on leashes. Pet owners are required to clean up animal waste. Cyclists also are invited to use the road during daytime hours.
Superintendent Joan Anzelmo said not plowing the road so far this year has helped cut costs. The road will be plowed as needed if new storms drop snow, which may cause temporary road closures, Anzelmo said.
“This has been an exceptionally mild winter,” she said. “I made a decision to plow earlier by a month.”
