Woman accused of faking cancer turns herself in
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A former Steamboat Springs woman accused of faking cancer to raise $7,000 in charity has turned herself in at the Routt County Jail.
Steamboat Today reports 34-year-old Elizabeth Emilie Bateman, who now lives in New Mexico, was arrested Friday after a judge signed off on a warrant earlier this week. She is accused of hosting a fundraiser for a fake cancer charity and spending the proceeds on herself.
The arrest warrant says Bateman’s blog and Facebook page show her on beach vacations, a skydiving trip and riding a helicopter.
Detectives say they identified 28 people who donated money.
Police began investigating in March after they say friends became suspicious and Bateman posted on Facebook that she had faked having cancer. She faces a charge of felony theft.
