Woman accused of hatching theater shooting scam

AURORA — A 19-year-old woman accused of swindling donors hoping to give to victims of the Aurora theater shooting is facing a misdemeanor theft charge.

Police say Katherine Elizabeth Peroni of Aurora posed as a caretaker for a girl named Kadence and told potential donors the child’s mother was shot during the July 20 shooting that left 12 dead and 58 wounded. Peroni, who is due in court Tuesday, allegedly collected several toys and had a PayPal account with more than $500 in it.

Police say the alleged scam fell apart when one of the donors received a call from Peroni imitating the made-up child.
