Woman on rafting trip dies in Arkansas River

CANON CITY — A rafting company employee has died after an accident in the Arkansas River, near Parkdale.

Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman says 22-year-old Nikki Innes of Canon City died Wednesday after getting caught on a snag while swimming in a rapid during a rafting trip.

Innes and four other people in her raft had decided to get out and swim just west of Parkdale. The river was running at 1,400 cubic feet per second at the Parkdale gauge.

Twellman says the other swimmers got back into the raft, but Innes was hung up on a snag. The others had trouble freeing her. She was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead Wednesday.

Innes had been working in the office for Whitewater Adventure Outfitters.
