Woman survives 5 days after Colorado highway crash

FAIRPLAY — A Colorado woman is recovering after being stranded in her car for five days after crashing off a rural highway near Fairplay.

Hikers found 43-year-old Kristin Hopkins of Highlands Ranch on Sunday below U.S. Highway 285 over Red Hill Pass. The Colorado State Patrol says she was conscious and coherent. She was taken to the hospital by helicopter to be evaluated.

Patrol spokeswoman Cpl. Kris Galyean says Hopkins crashed Tuesday, going off the right side of the road in a left curve. Her 2009 Chevrolet Malibu struck multiple trees, went down an embankment and rolled several times before landing on its top.

U.S. 285 runs through the scenic South Park area, where sprawling ranch land is surrounded by mountains.
