Workers blast through I-70 Twin Tunnels
IDAHO SPRINGS — The last big blast of the Twin Tunnels widening project on Interstate-70 near Idaho Springs is over.
Since April 19, crews have set 70 charges to move about 20,000 cubic yards of rock from the 635-foot-long tunnel. Traffic had to be stopped during blasting work.
According to the Denver Post, rock blasting was one of the key phases of the project, which includes expanding the eastbound bore of the tunnels. Workers will add an eastbound lane between East Idaho Springs and U.S. Highway 6.
