Youth cited for arson in Battlement Mesa apartment fire

A 13-year-old Battlement Mesa resident has been issued a summons for fourth-degree arson in connection with a fire that destroyed two apartments and heavily damaged four others Sunday.

The fire occurred mid-day Sunday in the 16-unit “D” building of the Willow Ridge apartments, at 854 Battlement Parkway in Battlement Mesa.

Garfield County sheriff’s investigators and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation investigated the blaze. The 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the nonprofit Garfield County YouthZone contributed to the charging determination.

Both the juvenile and the juvenile’s mother cooperated during the investigation, the sheriff’s office said. It said it was providing no further information about the case to protect the integrity of the prosecution.

The fire began in unit 204 of the apartment building and spread to a second apartment through a common attic. Four others suffered heavy water damage. No one was injured in the incident.
