Mike Provencher was not supposed to be the starting shortstop for the Mesa State baseball team this season.
An elbow injury to Matt Bodenchuk, though, moved Provencher from outfield to short, where he hit .435 with 16 home runs and 70 RBI.
Thursday, Provencher was selected the RMAC player of the year and his coach, Chris Hanks, is the co-coach of the year.
Provencher made the All-RMAC first team along with teammates Curtis Englehart (senior first baseman), Kyle Hogue (senior third baseman), Matt Miller (senior designated hitter) and Chris Carma (junior pitcher).
Montrose High School graduate Jake Palmer, a Metro State senior outfielder, made the first team.
The Mavericks’ Andrew Martinez (junior second baseman), Chris Cassell (junior outfielder) and T.J. Butch (junior pitcher) made the second team.
Senior pitcher Jason Enewold and junior pitcher Kevin Chritz were honorable mention selections.
Nebraska-Kearney junior Ryan Sheldon was the RMAC pitcher of the year, Metro State outfielder Brennan Brown the freshman of the year and Colorado Mines coach Jerrid Oates the co-coach of the year.
