Affidavit: Dispute escalates with shots, baseball bats

Michael Renteria Jr.

A child-custody dispute erupted Saturday in Grand Junction with one man shot multiple times, along with two other men and a woman struck with baseball bats, according to an arrest affidavit.

Michael Renteria Jr., 21, 2005 Elm Ave., was booked late Saturday at the Mesa County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, menacing and reckless endangerment. He’s being held on $100,000 bond. Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said an investigation remains active.

The police department removed several pieces of information, including several names, in the heavily-redacted version of Renteria’s arrest affidavit that was released today.

The affidavit includes a statement from one witness who told officers Renteria Jr. was among three individuals who drove up around 11 a.m. Saturday to 476 Glen Road in what started as a custody dispute. The witness said two people had baseball bats and Renteria Jr., had a small semi-automatic handgun.

Sean Dibble, 30, told officers he felt like his right arm had been broken at the elbow after being hit by one of the suspects with a bat. Erica Dibble, 27, said she had been hit in her left side by a bat-wielding suspect. Her common-law husband, Frank Rodriguez, 37, was allegedly shot twice in the leg by Renteria Jr. The assailants, allegedly including Renteria Jr., fled in several cars as police were arriving at the scene.

A fourth assault victim, Scott Stallings, 28, who was hit with a bat, told officers one of the suspects yelled death threats as they were fleeing.

“Stallings said as Renteria Jr. was driving off in the blue Ford Explorer, he saw Renteria Jr. pointing a gun in his direction and fire two to four additional shots at him,” the affidavit said.
