Art project gets $6,000 to help with installations

Sculptor works on the Walter Walker bronze.

The Legends Sculpture Project, which has installed two sculptures of well-known Grand Valley figures in downtown Grand Junction, has received a $6,000 donation toward its goal of installing five bronzes of significant contributors.

The contributions came in two, $3,000 increments, one each from Bryan Johnson and his employer, Microsoft, said Jacquie Chappell-Reid, co-chairwoman of the Legends Committee.

The Legends Committee is still working to raise almost $130,000 for its goal of installing five bronzes in five years.

The committee installed sculptures of playwright Dalton Trumbo and former Sentinel Publisher Walter Walker on Main Street.

This year, the committee will install a sculpture of William Moyer, founder of The Fair Store in Grand Junction and the donor of the original swimming pool in Lincoln Park, which is still known as Moyer Pool.

Moyer lent money from The Fair Store to entrepreneurs in the valley, Chappell-Reid said.

“He was very instrumental in helping to get many businesses started along the way,” she said.

The Moyer bronze will be dedicated Oct. 16.

Still to be dedicated are sculptures of the founder of St. Mary’s Hospital, Sister Mary Balbina Farrell, and John Otto, a trailbuilder who lobbied for the establishment of Colorado National Monument.
