Art on the Corner: ‘Beginnings’
SCULPTURE: “Beginnings” is in front of Rocky Tops, on the south side of Main Street in the 500 block.
ARTIST: Brenda Daniher of La Junta (http://www.benbronze.com)
DESCRIPTION: The bronze sculpture is four feet tall and features a woman figure sitting on the edge of the flower bed, looking up from a book she’s reading. She wears a dress, is barefoot, and has long, wavy hair. Her dress forms around the edge of the flower bed, draping down the side with numerous detailed folds.
INSPIRATION: “This piece is half of a two-figure piece that is on display in front of Otero Junior College (La Junta),” Daniher said.
The two-piece sculpture at the college depicts the figures interacting — the young lady just put her book aside and the young man is speaking to her.
“The young man has his backpack on, bent over talking to her. It’s the beginning of college — a new life beginning — the beginning of a new future, and the beginning of a new friendship that comes at this point in a person’s life. She’s a bold, happy young lady experiencing all the new beginnings,” she said.
PAST ENTRIES: Daniher’s most recent submission to Art on the Corner was “Puppy Love,” in 2003. It is now on display at a day care facility in Eads.
