Art on the Corner: ‘Happiness on Top’

“Happiness on Top,” by Jeff Turner of Silver City, N.M.

SCULPTURE: “Happiness on Top” is in front of Page Parsons Jewelers, on the north side of the 400 block of Main Street.

ARTIST: Jeff Turner of Silver City, N.M.

DESCRIPTION: The bright yellow steel sculpture stands just over 6 feet tall and features a number of blocked arches, welded together and facing a variety of directions. The main piece balances on the tip of one of the arches, where it is welded to a contrasting black, cone-shaped piece of steel.

INSPIRATION: “As usual, I do a lot of drawings until I get something I like. The visual part usually comes first and the title after the fact. It just is a very happy piece, so ‘Happiness On Top’ fit,” Turner said.

And his frame of mind didn’t hurt at the time, either.

“Things were going very well,” he said.

PAST ENTRIES: Turner’s previous sculptures in the Art on the Corner exhibit are “Struggle and Embrace” and “The Source of Many Things” in 2007, “Leapfrog” in 2008 and “Prescient Beast” in 2009.
