Art on the Corner: ‘Stumped’
SCULPTURE: “Stumped” is on the northwest corner of Fifth and Main streets, near the Dalby Wendland Building.
ARTIST: Doyle Svenby lives in Manitou Springs. His website is doylesvenby.com.
DESCRIPTION: The tree stump-shaped piece is created with numerous curved, intertwined, twisted and gnarly rods. The rods are spaced to form a cage-like structure with a stack of large river rocks inside. “Stumped” was installed in a landscaped area among some of the new trees, shrubs and flowers planted during the Main Street Uplift earlier this year.
INSPIRATION: “I am an avid gardener. I love being outside,” Svenby said. “I kind of look at things differently than other people. I use a lot of found and recycled objects and I got the idea of doing the tree from my love of the outdoors.”
PAST ENTRIES: This is the first year that Svenby has submitted sculptures to the Art in the Corner. Along with “Stumped,” there is “Rusty,” a year-round snowman, on the northeast corner of the roundabout at Seventh and Main streets.
