Bank helps kids attend museum’s history event

Hundreds of Mesa County students will attend the Museum of the West’s Re-Enactors Day next week with the help of Alpine Bank.

Admission to the annual event at the museum is $3.50 per student, but Alpine Bank is underwriting $1 of each admission, reducing the cost to $2.50 per student.

Alpine Bank’s participation is intended to take up where school district funding leaves off, said Paula Voytilla, community relations/marketing director for Alpine Bank.

The district and museum “definitely don’t have funds for this kind of thing, and we definitely like to help,” Voytilla said.

If the demand exceeds Alpine’s $2,000 commitment, the bank will consider increasing the amount, she said.

Re-Enactors Day is open to all students in Mesa County, including those in District 51 schools, charter schools and home schools. Teachers and chaperones are admitted free.

The event “is like 50 field trips in one,” said David Bailey, curator of history at the museum.

The day includes activities from antique cars to military re-enactors, candle-making, gold panning, casting dinosaur bones, prehistoric archaeology and aviation and a flight simulator.

Alpine Bank also is underwriting the cost of supplies for many of the demonstrations, Bailey said.

Re-Enactors Day usually attracts as many as 1,000 students.
