Big first quarter lifts Palisade past Glenwood

Palisade pounced on Glenwood Springs early, outscoring the Demons 19-3 in the first quarter, en route to a 55-31 victory in 4A Western Slope League boys basketball Tuesday in Glenwood Springs.

Palisade struggled at the foul line in the second quarter and finished the first half 3 of 16 on free throws, allowing the Demons to remain in the game.

The Bulldogs’ defense, however, put away Glenwood Springs in the second half and forced the Demons into 31 turnovers for the game. Palisade (12-5, 10-2) outscored the Demons 29-14 after the intermission and even found its touch from the free-throw line, making 9 of 11.

“We really played a solid second half,” Palisade assistant coach Greg Tafel said.

Post player Levi Hoaglund led the Bulldogs with 20 points.

“They couldn’t stop us inside at all,” Tafel said. “Levi took his time ... he just scored inside or got fouled.”

League-leader Palisade’s win sets up a showdown with second-place Eagle Valley (13-4, 9-3) on Friday night.

Aspen 62, Moffat County 49: Aspen (14-3, 12-2) won a showdown between 3A Western Slope League title contenders. Moffat County dropped to 14-2, 12-2.

Girls Basketball

Holly Brooks scored a game-high 16 points as host Montrose defeated Central 54-20.

Taryn Smith led Central (5-15, 1-7 SWL) with four points.

(13-4, 6-2) led 24-8 at halftime.

“We’re familiar with their personnel,” Montrose coach Eric Sanchez said. “They have girls who can drive to the basket, and they have some shooters, so we just wanted to not let them do what they do well.”

Brooks hit two 3-pointers, and teammate Kala Keltz joined her in double figures, scoring 12 points.

Glenwood Springs 57, Palisade 32: The Demons (12-5, 8-5 4A WSL) outscored the Bulldogs by at least five points in every quarter on senior night to avenge a previous loss.

Kenzi Nelson-Buehler led Glenwood Springs with 13 points and Jordan DeCrow scored 12.

Cruz Maestas topped the Bulldogs (7-10, 6-6) with 13 points.

Grand Valley 59, Cedaredge 47: Ashlynn Speakman hit seven 3-pointers to finish with 25 points for Grand Valley, which finished with 11 3-pointers.

Haley Johnson added three 3-pointers and 12 points for the Cardinals (13-4, 11-3) in the 3A Western Slope League game.

Cedaredge dropped to 7-10, 6-8.
