Buying the calendar

Copies of the Legends of Rotary 2010-11 16-month calendar “A Tribute to Sexy Old Guys” is on sale locally at Walgreens locations and at for $10 each or three for $25.

In an effort to shake up the fundraising world, one local club asked more than a dozen of its members to take off their clothes.

It worked.

The Grand Junction Downtown Rotary Club has released its 2010-11 calendar entitled, “A Tribute to Sexy Old Guys.”

In the 16-month calendar, more than a dozen male Rotary members between the ages of 55 and 90 are pictured with varying amount of clothes.

The money raised from the sale of the calendar will be donated to local children’s charities.

The calendar is on sale at local Walgreens stores or at for $10 each or $25 for three.

Reed Mitchell, a local Rotarian who thought of the idea to do a calendar, was in charge of production and photo shoots.

“I’ve been laughing since I thought of it in January,” said Mitchell, who persuaded, among other men, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel to smile for a camera holding a sword by an American flag. “The sales will probably go on until March, and I’ll probably laugh until then.”

Mitchell appears on the calendar’s collage page, wearing a leather vest on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

“It’s the perfect gift for people you love or people you don’t really like,” Mitchell joked.

In the calendar, Mitchell included information about the Grand Junction Downtown Rotary Club and made up some fun facts about the men who appeared in the calendar, including co-Mr. February, Kevin McChesney, a Rotary Club board member.

In McChesney’s photo, he is holding ski poles behind an aspen tree wearing nothing but underwear in the snow.

“It was freezing that day,” McChesney said. “We drove up Grand Mesa, parked by the side of the road, and I took off my clothes.”

McChesney admitted that was a sentence he never thought he’d say. But, he added, the calendar was a fun way for local men to raise money for charity.
