Breezeway remodeling begins in downtown GJ

The breezeway on the south side of the 500 block of Main Street is being worked on in anticipation of phase two of the Downtown Uplift project.

Construction begins this week on remodeling two Main Street breezeways.

The breezeways, located on the south side of the 500 block of Main Street and on the north side of the 600 block of Main Street, will be under construction through Nov. 19.

The project is part of preparations for the second phase of the Downtown Uplift project, which will begin in January on the 400, 500 and 600 blocks of Main Street.

Electric lines have to be run from alleys through the breezeways to the street to enhance opportunities for vendors to use electricity outdoors as part of phase two plans, said Downtown Development Authority spokeswoman Kathy Dirks.

“It’s not a good idea to have the street and the breezeways closed at the same time,” Dirks said, hence the beginning of breezeway demolition this week.

Dirks said stores also wanted the breezeways complete before the start of the holiday shopping season.

The redone breezeways will have a new, stucco finish and improved lighting, Dirks said.

“It’ll just look brighter and cleaner,” she said.
