Mesa men down Regis behind senior guard Mathews

Ryan Mathews has played several roles for the Mesa State College men’s basketball team.

Saturday night, the senior guard was the leader.

Mathews scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Mavericks to a 78-69 RMAC victory over Regis on Saturday night at the Regis Fieldhouse. Most of his damage didn’t come from the 3-point line. It came from the free-throw line, where he made 14 of 16 shots.

“Ryan had a fantastic game,” Mesa State associate head coach Andy Shantz said. “He really carried us. It was fun to watch Ryan. He played great. He did a great job attacking the basket.”

Jase Herl added 16 points and eight rebounds and Kurt Bangle scored 10 points for the Mavericks (5-4, 2-2 RMAC).

Regis shot 56 percent from the 3-point line to hand Mesa State its fifth consecutive loss, 91-75 in an RMAC game at Regis Fieldhouse.

“They drilled them,” Mesa State coach Timi Brown said. “They shot lights out.

“It seemed every single player drained one in the first five, six minutes of the game.”

Alishea Kelly led the Mavericks (3-7, 0-4 RMAC) with a Mesa career-high 20 points.

Four players scored in double figures for Regis, led by Courtney Ault with 25 points. Paulina
Tuell had 23, Emily Kuipers 13 and Lauren Luebbe 11.
