College to host 140 high school musicians

More than 140 high school musicians are participating in the Best of the West Select Band at Mesa State College this weekend.

The students have the opportunity to work with two guest conductors: Joan deAlbequerque from California State University in Long Beach and Stephanie Texera from the University of Colorado; a guest composer, Carolyn Bremer also from Colorado State University; and a guest musician, Lisa Pegher, a percussionist.

Two concerts are planned in connection with Best of the West.

• At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, Pegher joins the Mesa State College Wind Symphony for a performance at the Moss Performing Arts Center’s Robinson Theatre, 1231 N. 12th St.
The concert also features the world premiere of “Saturnalia” by Bremer.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students and children.
After two days of rehearsals, the students involved Best of the West’s two bands perform at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Robinson Theatre. This concert is free.

•  Another performance to mark on your calendar is the Mesa State College Holiday Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Robinson Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students and children.
