Soprano Kara Guggenmos to perform with orchestra
Soprano Kara Guggenmos joins the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra as its guest performer at the October concert.
Guggenmos will perform Richard Strauss’ “Four Last Songs,” written shortly before the composer’s death.
“This piece highlights (Guggenmos’) stunning vocal abilities as the soprano line soars over the entire orchestra,” a symphony news release said.
The symphony’s “Tchaikovsky!” concert, set for at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Grand Junction High School, will begin with American composer Samuel Jones’ “Elegy for String Orchestra.”
“‘Elegy’ was written in the days following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy,” according to the symphony. It “was written as a brief musical statement of the grief and shock that enveloped the country and the world.”
During the second half of the concert, the symphony will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Fifth Symphony,” which “highlights the romantic emotions that is the trademark of Tchaikovsky’s music,” according to the symphony.
Tickets to the concert are $27, $23 and $18 and can be purchased by calling 243-6787 or online at gjsymphony.org. Discounts are available for students and seniors.
