Contractor vowing changes after Meeker school debacle

A Fort Collins company said Monday that it is implementing new quality-control measures for its projects in response to structural errors it made in building the year-old Meeker Elementary School.

“The measures will ensure that all projects handled by The Neenan Company meet the most-stringent standards set by the company, its clients and state regulators,” the company said in a news release.

Neenan built the school under a design-build contract. The Meeker School District closed it before the start of this school year and is teaching its students in other buildings after concerns arose about the building’s ability to withstand lateral forces such as high winds or earthquakes.

Neenan recently fired its structural engineer on the project, Gary Howell, after the Denver Post reported that his engineering license was lapsed when he worked on the project. State agencies are reviewing other Neenan projects in Colorado in light of the Meeker situation.

Neenan said Monday it will review and confirm the credentials of all of its licensed employees, expand its continuing education programs for employees, and implement a peer review process to evaluate structural designs and drawings for compliance with standards. The reviews will occur when plans are first to be delivered, during the middle of construction, and upon a project’s completion.

Neenan’s efforts to provide assurances come a week after the Meeker School District’s superintendent and its owner’s representative on the elementary school project both voiced fears that the concerns that have come to light could impact the company’s finances and ability to pay for planned repairs to the school.

In Monday’s release, Neenan president Randy Myers reiterated the company’s commitment to fix the school, and added, “We have been part of the Colorado community for 40 years, and our new quality-control measures will help ensure we are for the next 40 years and beyond.”
