Discussion planned on comics

Alter egos, sidekicks and the battle between good and evil are the themes of comic books and, apparently, show up in “Await Your Reply,” the One Book, One Mesa County choice for 2011.

In a discussion titled “Alter Egos and Sidekicks,” Grand Junction resident and well-known comic book expert Charlie Novinski will lead a discussion exploring these crossover themes in comics and the thriller by Dan Chaon. The discussion will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Mesa County Libraries’ Central Library, 530 Grand Ave.

Novinskie is a lifelong comics fan, served as the sales and promotions manager for Topps Comics from 1993–98 and published “Comics Spotlight” magazine.

Novinskie also wrote the introduction to Marvel Comic’s founder Stan Lee’s book “Stan’s Soapbox: The Collection,” according to a news release.

He serves on the board of directors for the HERO Initiative, a nonprofit organization that helps comic book creators in need of assistance.
