‘Dogs face Montrose in playoffs
Fruita the lone Western Slope qualifier in 5A
Palisade High School’s loss to Battle Mountain on Thursday in the 4A Western Slope League girls soccer tournament final probably cost it the opportunity to host a first-round game Tuesday in the Class 4A state playoffs.
So, the Bulldogs will go on the road, but instead of a long haul over the mountains, they’ll make a short trip to Montrose, which got the No. 10 seed and will host 23rd-seeded Palisade. The game’s start time remains to be set.
Montrose won the Southwestern League with an 8-2 record and takes an 11-4 mark into the playoffs.
Palisade finished third in the final 4A WSL standings at 8-3 and is 10-4-1 overall.
The winner of their game advances to the second round Friday against the winner of the game between No. 7 Mullen and 26th-seeded Mead.
5A: Fruita faces Fairview
Fruita Monument was the lone Western Slope team to make the Class 5A state field, and the Wildcats drew the 28th seed and a game Wednesday at fifth-seeded Fairview, a Boulder high school.
Fruita tied Durango for second place in the Southwestern League at 6-3-1 and takes a 9-6-1 record into the postseason. Fairview is 11-3-1 and finished third in the Front Range League at 8-3.
The winner of their game will advance to Saturday’s second round against the winner of No. 12 Denver East and 21st-seeded Castle View.
3A: State debut for Cardinals
Grand Valley High School earned its first-ever playoff berth and received the 11th seed in the Class 3A state field.
The Cardinals will play 22nd seed Denver Science and Tech Stapleton on Friday at Kent Denver in a first-round game in Region 6.
Grand Valley enters the playoffs with a 12-2-1 record and an 8-1 mark in 3A Region 3 play, where the Cardinals finished second to Coal Ridge (14-1, 9-0). Denver Science and Tech is 9-2 overall and finished second in 3A Region 8 at 9-1.
Kent Denver, seeded sixth in 3A, is the Region 6 host because it is the region’s highest seed.
Kent Denver plays 27th-seeded Alamosa in the first round Friday.
Friday’s winners advance to a second-round game Saturday at Kent Denver.
