Driver injured after semi strikes Denver bridge

DENVER — One person has been transported to the hospital after a semitrailer hit a bridge over Interstate 25 near downtown Denver.

The truck, traveling southbound on I-25, crashed into the bridge at Speer Boulevard on Monday, knocking loose some concrete and rebar.

A large piece of debris from the bridge struck a car, pinning the driver inside. Police say that driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Two other cars were involved in the accident, but no other injuries have been reported.

Police photos show one car with a smashed windshield.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says inspectors are on the way to the scene to make sure the bridge is stable. The highway will remain closed until officials have determined the situation is safe.
